KATI 8: Art Therapy: Psychopathology and
              Theories of Personality

39 Hours, 3 Credits 

Description:

This course explores the diagnosis and treatment of mental illness, abnormal emotional functioning & clinical syndromes, within the context of art therapy practice. The course includes an orientation to cultural complexities regarding health, illness and psychopathology.

 

Instructor: Jan Souza, Lani Gerity and Lucille Proulx               

        

Format: Online readings and seminar with creative activities and presentations.

 

Learning Objectives:

·         To examine mental illness, personality disorders and abnormal emotional behaviour and their diagnosis and treatment in the context of art therapy.

·         To explore personal views and understanding of the experience of psychopathology.

·         To examine ethnocentric assumptions regarding health and illness, and different theories of etiology.

·         To be able to analyze clinical work with an awareness of cultural issues.

·         To become familiar with the DSM IV and be able to evaluate clinical data.

Assignments and Evaluation: 

Marks: Creative expression 20%, Presentation & paper 50%, Clinical assignment 30%.

  1. Creative Expression:  An introspective study of biographical accounts of experience with mental illness.  This assignment is to take a creative form such as a poem, a monologue, video, song or artwork to be presented in class (10 minutes or less) or online to the group.  Students are required to read at least one biographical account of mental illness and to review movies, poetry, music and art to assist in this assignment.  Sources must be documented.  See creative expression titles on following page.
  2. A clinical assignment.
  3. A presentation & paper on a specific illness or disorder. Presentation is to be approximately 30 minutes in length and there should be a handout for the other students. Presentation should include:
    1. a literature review on the topic & history of the disorder,
    2. different cultural interpretations and approaches,
    3. definitions, DSM III criteria and description of symptoms, 
    4. theories of etiology and treatment approaches,
    5. potential impact for the individual, family and society
    6. relevant art therapy approaches

Topics for the paper: depression, mania, bi-polar disorder, schizophrenia, dissociative disorders (DID/MPD), PSTD, personality disorders: (borderline, schizoid), obsessive compulsive, psychosis, dementia, phobias, anxiety, gender identity, tourettes syndrome, eating disorders, and disorders of childhood and adolescence, etc. Please discuss your topic with the instructor to prevent overlapping subjects.
