KATI 3: Art Therapy: Therapy and Practice

39 Hours, 3 Credits 

Description:

The examination of the theoretical foundations of art therapy will cover a wide spectrum of approaches to art therapy and the underlying theories. It will include psychoanalytical, object relations, existential, humanistic, developmental, cognitive, behavioural and gestalt orientations to art therapy.

Format: This course will include lectures, discussions and experiential art therapy studio time.

 

Learning Objectives:

·         To examine in an art therapy context key psychoanalytic concepts.

·         To identify, compare, contrast and evaluate a variety of art therapy approaches:

a.      Psychodynamic, Psychoanalytic and object relations

b.      Phenomenological and existential    

c.      Person centered, humanistic, gestalt

d.      Developmental, cognitive and behavioural art therapy

e.      Jungian & Adlerian

Case, Caroline & Dalley, Tessa. (1989) The Handbook of Art Therapy. London: Tavistock Publications.

 

Assignments and Evaluation: 

Take home assignment (20%) definitions and diagrams (40%) chart (20%) participation (20%).

 

  1. Definitions, charts & diagrams:
    a)     For 10 art therapy approaches: make a diagram on the underlying theoretical position and beliefs - outline the theory of change and therapeutic process based on the art therapy process and create your own chart, diagram or metaphor to illustrate it. Approaches: psychoanalytic, object relations, self psychology, Jungian, phenomenological, humanistic, gestalt, behavioural, developmental, cognitive-behavioural, Adlerian, existential, open studio.
    b)     Create a chart of the different art therapy approaches. Compare and evaluate by outlining similarities and differences, advantages and disadvantages.

  2. Take home assignment. Design an art therapy exercise and outline the underlying theoretical basis. Make a piece of art to go with it to illustrate the activity.
