KATI 12: Art Therapy Readings

39 Hours, 3 Credits 

Description:

The focus of this course is on philosophical and theoretical orientations of contemporary art therapists. The intention in this course is to examine the role of art and the creative process in its application to therapy.

Format: This is a seminar readings course that will include guest presenters. This could be done as an individual directed studies readings course.

 

Learning Objectives:

    • To examine contemporary art therapy theories.
    • To examine the role art and the creative process has in its application to therapy.
    • To examine symbolic interpretation within the context of the art making style.
    • To examine concepts of resistance, interpretation, counter-transference and diagnosis in the context of art therapy.
    • To identify and explore different approaches to creativity.

Lusebrink, Vija. (1990) Imagery and Visual Expression in Therapy.New York: Plenum Press.

Simon, Rita. (1992) The Symbolism of Style. London & New York: Tavistock/Routledge.

 

Requirements:

1.      Write a book review of a recent art therapy publication. (not a school text). This review is to be a formal, typed, double-spaced paper written thoughtfully and critically, with appropriate citations and bibliography (APA style). The goal of this review is to create a publishable paper.

2.      Write a short paper on “What is art therapy?” This paper is to express your own ideas and approach to art therapy. Consider your ideas on interpretation. Be clear and succinct.  Use the APA referencing method for appropriate texts.

3.      Directed readings and discussion with instructor.

 

Assignments and Evaluation: 

Book review 30%; paper 30%; directed readings 20%; seminar, conference and/or workshop participation 20% (minimum 12 hours).

 

Please note: This course is offered alternating years on campus opposite the Expressive Therapy course. Distance students are required to have a minimum of 12 hours of workshops or conferences and 27 hours of directed readings. The Institute offers 12 to 18 hours of special workshops per year. Students may also request permission to have credit for attending national or provincial conferences. Online discussion groups are in the process of being developed for distance students.
